Canadian Red Cross and momstown partner
to teach families about emergency preparedness.
May 6-12 is
Emergency Preparedness Week and the Canadian Red Cross is partnering with
momstown (momstown.ca) to provide workshops to local momstown groups to help
ensure families are prepared in case of disasters.
Emergency Preparedness Week
Emergency
Preparedness Week (EP Week) is an annual event that takes place each year
during the first full week of May. This national event is an opportunity for
the Canadian Red Cross to remind families to plan for emergencies.
Disasters can strike anywhere at any time, and Canadians should be prepared to
care for themselves and their families for at least 72 hours in a disaster, and
up to two weeks in a health emergency like a pandemic.
Being prepared means having the knowledge, plans, and tools to cope in an emergency. We encourage Canadians to have a plan in place by learning about the risks in your community, making a work and home evacuation plan, and making or buying an emergency preparedness kit.
During the workshops, participating moms will learn about the disaster risks in their community, how to create an emergency plan and how to build an emergency preparedness kit with essential items to enable their family to be self-sufficient for 72-hours in the event of an emergency.
Most Canadians can’t
imagine a disaster happening in their community,
but disasters can and do
happen.
Last year, the Canadian Red Cross responded to many disasters across
the country including floods, wildfires, tornadoes and house fires.
By being
prepared ahead of time, families can ensure their comfort and safety by
minimizing the impact of a disaster when it occurs.
momstown Newmarket-Aurora gathered at the Crossland's Church in Newmarket for our workshop.

Nice to see the "younger generation" getting up to speed on emergency preparedness. Seriously, we need to make sure that we can provide for our loved ones after an emergency or disaster.
